What a difference a year makes! We (the USA) graduated a generation of young people into an economy with no jobs for them. This painting was done a year after Evan graduated college. He had moved to LA to make his way as an actor. Of course, there were no beginning jobs in the acting field— and he was hugely unemployed, broke, and no prospect of future. He was discouraged. I flew to LA to be with him, but mostly to tell him he had to to come back to live in STL because his parents could no longer financially help. We sat on the step outside with a V-8 discussing the future. The look of sadness and a bit of despair is obvious. I love this portrait for it’s humanity. Evan had grown a beard at this time.
