THREADS: open now

Seventy-five watercolor portraits, representing thirty seven nations of origin. Each painting is accompanied by a summary of the immigrant’s experience in making their way to the United States.

A catalogue and opening statement on Threads will accompany the exhibition, written by Leslie Potashner, a doctoral candidate at Drew University. Her research is on refugee history.

Immigrants have been the life blood of our nation from the beginning. One way or another, we are all descendants of immigrants. The United States is a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and ideas from people drawn from all over the world. Each portrait represents a colorful thread in the tapestry of our great nation, telling a story of dignity, promise, and fulfillment.

“THREADS” Exhibit, a Celebration of the Immigrant Story in Watercolor by Carol Carter, Opening in December.

Opening Dates December 1-2, 2023 at Carter’s St. Louis Studio

Internationally acclaimed artist Carol Carter presents her latest body of work, THREADS, featuring portraits of immigrants, and celebrating the richness and diversity of people who make up America. In describing her concept for the exhibit, Carter said, “Immigrants have been the life blood of our nation from the beginning. One way or another, we are all descendants of immigrants. The United States is a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and ideas from people drawn from all over the world. Each portrait represents a colorful thread in the tapestry of our great nation, telling a story of dignity, promise, and fulfillment.”

Carter’s motivation for creating this body of work: “In recent years, immigration has become a controversial political topic. It concerned me enough to join the conversation by creating a series of paintings showcasing the faces of immigrants that make up our country. I embarked upon the series in 2019, but when Covid 19 hit, I abandoned the project because it was prudent to stay separate from one another. In January 2023 I resumed work on THREADS.

Through social media, I invited US immigrants to send photos along with a short biography of their journey, year of arrival, and country of origin.”

The THREADS exhibition is comprised of 75 watercolor portraits, representing some 37 nations of origin. Each painting is accompanied by a summary of the immigrant’s experience in making their way to the United States. The paintings and the stories behind these individuals depict human resilience, intelligence, heroism, faith, creativity, and sacrifice. Carter states, “Our nation is stronger and more resilient as a result, in part, of immigrants’ diverse talent and heritage. THREADS is a celebration of 75 people in the St. Louis community who came from another country, but now call the United States ‘home.’” A catalogue and opening statement on Threads will accompany the exhibition, written by Leslie Potashner, a doctoral candidate at Drew University. Her research is on refugee history.
