GROWTH PORTRAITS

1986-2020

I began this series of work 35 years ago. I wanted to do a project that took two decades to complete. I decided to paint a portrait of my newborn son Evan, every year until he turned 21. It was an undertaking of commitment but one I was sure I could keep. The goal of the project was to paint in a universal format with the same medium during the calendar year of time. I chose to work in watercolor on 30 x 40 inch paper.

I began the series in 1986. Since that time, I have painted Evan every year. With this collection you can see Evan growing up, a child growing up, and my art process/growth changing. It has been an enigmatic body of work to share.

When Evan turned 21 I decided to continue on indefinitely. I raised the bar to include painting Evan every year for the rest of my life. I hope it will show a nice progression of growth, maturity, age, and wisdom. If I manage to paint him without interruption- it will be a unique collection in art history where someone’s life has been documented consecutively and consistently within a painting format.
